How often should my vehicles have brake tests?

Let's tackle this vital topic with clarity, as during some recent audits undertaken by us; it's been observed that the frequency of brake testing is a bit of a puzzling area for many operators. But let's make it crystal clear.

Previously, the 'Guide to Maintaining Roadworthiness’ recommended quarterly brake tests for commercial goods and public service vehicles, including a pre-MOT test, with additional brake tests at every safety inspection.

Now, since that point a few years ago, there have been significant updates in the latest version of the Guide. It's no longer just a suggestion but a strong recommendation to perform laden rolling-road brake tests at every regular safety inspection, and this is what we recommend to all our clients. For goods vehicle operators, this implies arranging loaded trailers for these inspections. It's also deemed acceptable to use a decelerometer for vehicles without trailers to measure overall brake efficiency.

Here's the crucial part: Whatever method you use for brake testing, it's imperative that the system provides performance results that can be documented in your safety inspection records. It's about integrating brake test scores into the inspection report and retaining the printout of the brake test report. This step is non-negotiable.

Finally, ensure that the personnel conducting these brake tests are well-versed with the necessary measurements and that the equipment used is precise and suitable for the task. This is about safety, compliance, and peace of mind. I hope that answers the question… let's make brake testing a clear and uncompromised part of your vehicle maintenance routine.
