The UK government has announced a major investment in infrastructure to support the transition to zero-emission HGVs. 54 new charging and hydrogen refuelling hubs will be installed across the country.
Speaking at the Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure Demonstrations (ZEHID) programme summit, Future of Roads Minister Lilian Greenwood confirmed that the hubs will be positioned at depots, motorway service areas, and along key transport routes to integrate seamlessly with existing freight operations.
The ZEHID programme, led by Innovate UK, is backed by £200 million from the Department for Transport (DfT). This initiative aims to provide essential infrastructure to help haulage operators transition to zero-emission fleets and support the UK’s net-zero goals.
Chris Ashley, Senior Policy Lead at the Road Haulage Association (RHA), welcomed the investment, stating that it will help increase confidence among operators looking to move away from diesel vehicles. He also emphasised the importance of continued collaboration between industry stakeholders and the government to ensure a smooth transition for the sector.
The hubs are being developed under four flagship project partnerships within the ZEHID programme:
- Project Electric Freightway
- eFREIGHT2030
- ZENFreight
- HyHAUL
With this investment, the UK’s road transport network is moving closer to a sustainable, zero-emission future. At LDP, we are committed to supporting operators in adapting to these changes and staying ahead of compliance requirements.
